WHY DO WE GET SICK?
Understanding the Mind-Body-Heart Connection
When the Body Speaks
Here I am in bed, knocked down by something I could only define as strong pain in my chest and my voice box.
Many years ago, I learned one truth: the body speaks to us, always with compassion and for our highest good.
When sickness hits, the immediate question is usually: How can I get rid of it? Pain is uncomfortable, unwanted, and often frightening. Yet today, as I lie in bed with my entire body aching and my voice silenced, I redirect the question: What is my body trying to tell me?
Sickness as a Message
Through the wisdom I’ve gained in holistic therapies, Ayurveda, and natural medicine, I started reflecting: Yesterday, I led a 3.5-hour live event, speaking nonstop in cold winter weather. I biked long distances, viruses are everywhere… the list goes on.
Ayurveda teaches that humans are a unified mind-body-emotion organism. Emotional imbalances, stress, or unprocessed ancestral trauma do not stay “in the mind”—they manifest in the body, in organs, tissues, and the heart. Our intellect is a smart device—it will argue and rationalize to protect us.
But protect from what? From feeling. From facing emotions trapped in the body.
The human body is a living map of all lived experiences, challenges, and traumas. From systemic therapy, we also know our body carries memories from our lineage. By integrating Ayurveda with systemic awareness, we honor the body as an interconnected organism where mind, body, and heart are inseparable.
Healing Through Ancestral Awareness
Three days ago, during my advanced silent family constellation therapy training in Warsaw, I witnessed a profound insight. I asked my teacher a question, and instantly he saw images: a little girl lying on the floor in a house in Ukraine, terrified by genocide events affecting Poles. That little girl was my grandmother at 2 years old.
Through systemic and ancestral healing, I realized that her panic and fear of sleeping alone had been carried in me for over 30 years, manifesting as tightness in my chest and voice box. In two minutes of internal work, I “took her from there” and allowed healing to begin.
This is how sickness works on a subtle level: the body signals that integration is occurring. Flu, viruses, or a cold may be part of your body’s integrative healing phase, allowing stored emotional burdens and ancestral memories to surface and resolve.
Ayurveda reminds us that emotional health is inseparable from physical health. When the heart is burdened with unprocessed trauma, the lungs, chest, and voice can reflect the energy of these unresolved experiences. By honoring this connection, we can promote natural healing and balance across the entire mind-body-emotion system.
What This Teaches Us
So why do we get sick? In my experience, illness is often the body’s way of healing emotional, psychological, and ancestral layers that are ready to be released. Pain, fever, and other symptoms are not enemies—they are signals that integration is underway.
By combining holistic modalities like Ayurveda, systemic therapy, and mind-body-emotional awareness, we can understand that our bodies are constantly seeking equilibrium. Emotional release, nutrition, breathwork, and self-observation all play a role in supporting natural recovery.
I have often told my clients, when they get a fever: Amazing! Well done! Their body is saying YES to healing. By honoring this process, we can accelerate recovery, live with more awareness, and embrace the messages our bodies give us.
